Rep. Lee Bright (D-Greensboro) introduced a bill to remove the
city’s ban on vouchers for elementary and secondary schools. At
the time of this writing it was still in committee.
But the bill wasn’t the only bill bright had up for a vote
yesterday – he also filed a bill [HB 2152 –
reinstate the study of capital punishment in this state]
that would have allowed the North Carolina’s attorney
general to bring the death penalty back, if the state
legislature voted to repeal it in 2010. They didn’t.
But as the News & Record reported [Attempts by
lawmakers to bring back the death penalty fail], that’s
not to say Bright doesn’t feel differently about
capital punishment. As part of the debate, Bright repeated his
regular argument against capital punishment – which, to his
credit, included the fact he had voted for reinstating the
death penalty once in the past.
Relying on that, Gray asked for Bright’s thoughts. The
state senator’s question was, “What more would you
have to do in order to convince the good people of this
state that you’re not only opposed to capital punishment,
but also in favor of removing the death penalty?”
Bright answered, “Just as I’ve been saying for a
long time, I’d like to see the death penalty reinstated,
but my first objective is to work on non-lethal means of
violent crime prevention.”
But clearly Bright has been working on non-lethal means of
violent crime prevention. He’s been trying to get a
